DENTAL IMPLANTS
Recapture your smile after tooth loss
Missing teeth and gaps in your mouth can distract from an otherwise beautiful smile. Dental Implants offer a permanent solution to this problem; actually mimicking your natural teeth and providing a fully functional replacement for missing teeth.
A Dental Implant is essentially a metal screw that is surgically inserted into the jaw bone. It acts as an anchor for a false tooth or a set of false teeth. As the mouth heals, approximately two to six months after surgery; the bone and Implant begin to fuse together. Small posts or abutments are then attached to the Implants, which are used to anchor Crowns, Bridges or Dentures.
Dental Implants provide amazing stability for patients. They help aid biting pressure and strain on existing teeth and reduce irritation and oral sores (often caused by Dentures).
Patients also find that once a missing tooth is replaced you will be able to eat and speak as you did previously — things that people often take for granted until their natural teeth are lost.

Frequently asked questions:
Will it hurt
Everyone is very different, however the feedback from our patients has been very positive; almost all have been very surprised at just how little discomfort they get after the treatment. Discomfort/pain a patient may experience is often related to how many implants they have placed. Like many dental procedures any discomfort during the procedure is taken care of with a local anaesthetic, and any discomfort afterwards can be controlled with painkillers.
How often would I need my implant checked
Every 6 months, just the same as the rest of your teeth, it would also need to be cleaned by the hygienist, someone that is specifically trained in the area of implant hygiene, to ensure the maximum longevity of your new implant.
Can I replace more than one tooth
Implants are used to replace one tooth and up to entire arches, you do not always require one implant to replace one tooth, sometimes only 4 implants are required to replace an entire arch. This is something that can be discussed at your consultation appointment. There are usually several solutions to suit all types of budgets and requirements.
How long will the procedure take
The procedure itself can take from 1 hour to 4 hours depending on the number of implants being placed. Generally 1 implant would take approximately 1 hour to place, and another 30-60mins for set-up of the clinical area. In most of our implant cases we prescribe a light sedative to help you feel relaxed, which is taken as a tablet.
What might limit my chances of having an implant
There are some medical factors that may prevent a person from having implants these include uncontrolled diabetes, chemotherapy, some blood disorders and rare bone disorders. We will also rethink treatment for a patient who is a heavy smoker or has poor bone density, or is on certain types of medication such as bisphosphonates given intravenously.
Have implants been around a long time
Today new improvements are being made all the time and studies have made this treatment very predictable and safe. Dentists have been trying to implant teeth for 100’s of years but only since the 1960’s has a successful and predictable method of tooth implantation been developed.
