PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY

Preventive DentistryHealthy smiles for life

Keeping your teeth healthy for the rest of your life with minimal intervention is extremely important. Preventive care minimises your risk of developing; tooth decay and Periodontal Disease (Gum Disease).

At Sydney Dental Professionals we recommend that everyone should have a check-up every six months. During your appointment, Dr Albert will examine your teeth for cavities as well as assess the health of your gums, in order to prevent gum disease and bone loss. At Sydney Dental professionals we also have a Dental Hygienist who is specially trained in the cleaning and maintenance of the mouth, teeth and gums. The hygienist cleans teeth by removing plaque, calculus (tartar) and staining.

Preventive care will help keep your smile beautiful, healthy and vibrant.

Here is a list of twelve top tips to help you maintain a bright and healthy smile.

  1. Brush your teeth twice a day, morning and night for at least 2 minutes each time. Please brush gently as scrubbing too hard can make your teeth darker instead of whiter.
  2. Floss at least once a day – at the end is preferred
  3. Visit a dental hygienist every 6 months – to prevent plaque build up and remove deeper stains
  4. Don’t drink or eat too many sweet things, if you do drink or rinse with some water afterwards to prevent things sticking to your teeth, too many sweet things will cause tooth decay.
  5. Have a whitening treatment completed with your dentist; this can brighten your teeth up to 6 shades lighter.
  6. Ladies can wear a darker (especially plum shades) colour lipstick to make teeth appear lighter
  7. Stop smoking – this can cause your teeth to stain quickly, not to mention the obvious health issues.
  8. Reduce the number of cups of tea, coffee and red wine each day – these can also stain your teeth.
  9. Visit your dentist at least twice a year for a complete dental check; prevention is far better than cure.
  10. Eat a healthy diet; foods such as water, apples, milk and cheese are good for your teeth.
  11. Don’t use your teeth to open packets, bite your fingernails or chew pens as this can cause them to chip or crack.
  12. Avoid acidic drinks as these can erode the enamel and weaken your teeth. If you must have them, try to drink them quickly, don’t sip over prolonged period and straight after rinse your mouth with milk or water – don’t brush for at least one hour.
